A new round of NHL expansion and the return of the NHL’s marquee game has the Flyers looking like a long shot for a spot in the Stanley Cup playoffs.
The NHL will have to go all in on a franchise, and one of the teams that could be interested in joining the league is the Toronto Maple Leafs, who play at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto and have a history of having a good relationship with the NHL.
The Leafs, which are the highest-profile NHL team since the 2011-12 lockout, have a chance to join the league if they can raise $50 million to do it.
The Flyers, who are a team in the Atlantic Division and are headed to a franchise in the Western Conference, have the option of getting a new arena, but they’d have to pay about $1.3 billion to move to a new venue.
The NHL has already agreed to a lease at the Wells Fargo Center, which will be used by the Flyers for five years.
