More than $3 million in digital currency was stolen from a Target store in the southern Illinois town of Gurnee, authorities said Wednesday.
The theft took place at a Target electronics store on Thursday, according to an affidavit.
Walmart, which operates more than 1,800 stores in the United States, said it is investigating the incident and will share more information as it becomes available.
Gurnee Police Chief Chris Johnson said detectives believe the suspect had access to a computer that belonged to the store’s owner.
He did not provide any details.
Gulfport police Sgt. Ryan Johnson said the suspect also stole more than $5,000 in cash.
Johnson said that when detectives spoke with the suspect, he admitted to stealing money from the store.
He also said he used an online debit card at the Target.
